Leadership

Leadership Opportunities

John XXIII College is proud to foster a culture of student leadership, offering a wide range of meaningful opportunities for students to take on responsibility, influence College life, and grow as individuals. Leadership is at the heart of our community, and our structured program allows students to develop practical skills in teamwork, communication, initiative, and service.

We are fortunate to have a large and dedicated team of student leaders who contribute across all areas of College life, from pastoral care and wellbeing to events, sports, charity, and academic support. While most leadership roles are held by senior residents in their third year or above, we also recognise and empower outstanding second-year students who demonstrate strong commitment and capability to contribute at the highest level.

These roles not only enrich the student experience at J23 but also provide a strong foundation for personal and professional success beyond the College gates. Whether you're leading a corridor, supporting your peers, coordinating a major event, or representing the College in the broader community, leadership at John XXIII is a rewarding and transformative part of the college journey.

Residents' Association

Your Voice, Your Community, Your College Experience

The John XXIII College Residents’ Association (RA) is a student-led body at the heart of College life. Every resident at J23 is automatically a member of the RA, and together, this vibrant group shapes the cultural, sporting, social, and creative heartbeat of the community.

The RA is responsible for organising and leading a broad range of inter-hall competitions, community events, and College traditions - including the annual College Production, formal events, social nights, and sporting tournaments. The Association plays a key role in making sure every student feels included, heard and connected.

At the helm of the RA are the President and Vice President - elected student leaders who represent the collective voice of the College and advocate on behalf of the student body. They work closely with College staff and the broader ANU residential network to ensure a supportive and enriching environment for all.

All positions within the RA are filled by election, allowing students to shape their own experience and take on leadership roles that build confidence, community, and lifelong skills.

SUPPORT RESIDENTS

Creating a Supportive and Connected College Experience

At John XXIII College, community and wellbeing are central to life on campus. The College Community is bought together by our Support Residents (SRs) which is headed up by our two Head SR's.

Each SR cares for a pod of approx. 18-20 students with a focus on well-being, comfortability and promoting psychological safety for every student that resides here.

Together, this team aspires to ensure John XXIII is not just a place to live - but is a vibrant, caring and connected home where students can grow and thrive.

Academic Mentors

Fostering Academic Excellence and Lifelong Learning

At John XXIII College, academic success is a key part of the student experience, and our Academic Mentors (AMs) play a central role in supporting this journey. The AMs are a dedicated team of senior students who foster a strong academic culture and provide tailored guidance to students - particularly first-year students as they transition into university life.

Led by two Head Academic Mentors, the team offers peer-to-peer support, organises tutorials, study sessions, and academic workshops, and helps create an environment where students are encouraged to strive for excellence.

Working closely with the College’s Student Support Team, the AMs also connect students with external learning opportunities and help open doors to career pathways and mentoring networks. Their mission is to ensure that every student at J23 feels confident, supported, and empowered to pursue their academic goals.

SRC/Charity/Mission and culture

Leading with Purpose, Serving with Heart

At John XXIII College, a strong commitment to charity and service is woven into the fabric of our community. Many of our students are actively engaged in meaningful philanthropic and advocacy work, dedicated to supporting those in need and creating positive change.

Our SRC works closely with our two Heads of Charity overseeing a range of charitable initiatives and fundraising activities throughout the year. Our SRC is a diverse team of student leaders who champion inclusion, wellbeing and equity across the College. Supporting the queer community and our multicultural community, each focused on ensuring all voices are heard and respected.

Through hands-on service, advocacy, and awareness campaigns, our students are empowered to live out the College’s values and make a meaningful difference in the world around them.

Community

John XXIII College is proudly student-led and staff-supported, with a strong culture of collaboration and shared leadership. At the heart of this approach is the Student Executive, a dynamic team of student leaders who drive our vision of a connected, caring, and aspirational community.

Meeting weekly with the Head of College, the Student Executive ensures that student voices are central to decision-making and that college life reflects the diverse needs, passions, and values of its residents. The Executive champions academic excellence, wellbeing, social engagement, inclusion, and spiritual life.
