Whether you’re sharing meals, joining a club or heading out for a campus event, life at J23 is full of moments that make your university experience truly complete.

Opportunities

Sport

Got a competitive streak? You’re in the right place. John XXIII College has a proud sporting tradition, having taken out the Interhall Sports Shield 19 times in the past 21 years. But for us, it’s not just about winning - it’s about participation, teamwork and having a great time together.

There’s a team for everyone, with sports open to all genders, skill levels and commitment preferences. Whether you’re chasing victory or just want to stay active and meet new people, you’ll find your place on the field, court or track.

Sport at Johns goes beyond the ANU competition. We also take part in interstate and international tours, giving students the chance to represent the College, travel and connect through sport on a bigger stage.

The Arts

John XXIII College is a place where creativity is celebrated and talent is nurtured. Our students are not just scholars and athletes, they are musicians, performers, and creatives who bring energy and colour to college life.

The arts are a big part of our community culture. Whether you're a seasoned musician or just like to have a go, our fully equipped music rooms are open daily and ready for solo practice or jam sessions. The College Band is a much-loved part of our social scene, performing at events throughout the year and providing the soundtrack to some of our best nights.

Theatrical talent also shines at J23, with an annual College Production that brings students together on stage and behind the scenes. From acting and directing to set design and tech, it’s a chance to build skills, connect with others, and bring something magical to life.

At John XXIII, the arts aren’t just an extracurricular, they are part of how we express ourselves, build confidence and have fun together.

Social

At John XXIII College, social life is at the heart of the student experience. We believe in the power of community and the importance of making space for connection, fun and celebration alongside your academic pursuits.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be part of a vibrant calendar filled with events that bring people together and make every week something to look forward to. We host everything from formal dinners and themed balls to courtyard concerts, movie nights, trivia competitions and chilled afternoons with music and mates under the trees.

Our legendary inter-corridor competitions spark friendly rivalry and team spirit, while special events like our O-Week and Bush Week help shape the unique culture and camaraderie that define J23.

We’re proud to offer a social experience that helps you recharge, connect and create friendships that last well beyond your university years.

Community Service

As a community, we are committed to making a positive impact on the world around us, and we encourage all our students to take part in this meaningful work.

Our two Heads of Charity lead our efforts, overseeing initiatives that support a variety of key charitable organisations. These projects range from fundraising events and volunteer opportunities to hands-on community engagement. Every student is encouraged to get involved, whether it’s lending a hand locally or supporting global causes.

Through these efforts, we aim to instill value s of compassion, empathy, and service - empowering our students to contribute to a better society and form lasting connections through shared acts of kindness.

Spirituality

John XXIII College is an independent Catholic college rooted in Christian values, where respect, honesty, and justice are central to our community life. While we embrace the Dominican tradition, we foster an inclusive environment where students from all backgrounds and faiths are welcome.

Our College offers numerous opportunities for spiritual connection as a means of personal growth, reflection, and service to others. We encourage students to explore their own spiritual journeys, providing opportunities for prayer, reflection, and community service. Regular Masses, faith-based events, and spiritual discussions are available for those who wish to deepen their connection to their faith, while all students are encouraged to respect and celebrate the diverse beliefs within our community.

At J23, we believe that spirituality and personal integrity are key to shaping not only academic success but also the development of compassionate, thoughtful individuals ready to make a positive impact in the world.

Employment/Scholarship Opportunities

At John XXIII College, we are dedicated to helping our students achieve their career aspirations by fostering connections with potential employers and creating pathways for professional development. We work closely with industry partners, providing networking opportunities, internships, and job placements, ensuring that our students have access to valuable career opportunities while living at the College.

Our J23 Conversations is a recent initiative which has proved to be inspiring and galvanising. Where we have regularly invited guests into the college to tell their story motivating our students to learn more about others and in turn themselves.

In addition to these employment opportunities, we also offer 50 leadership positions within the College, each accompanied by a scholarship in recognition of the responsibilities and contributions of these student leaders. These positions allow students to develop essential skills in leadership, communication, and event management, all while enriching their residential experience.
