The Honourable Justice Curran was appointed as a Justice of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) on 6 February 2023. She lived at John XXIII College from 1988 to 1990 while studying at the Australian National University, before beginning a legal career that would span private practice, the Bar and the judiciary.
After working in private practice in Canberra and Brisbane, Justice Curran was called to the Bar in 2012, where she developed a respected practice in family law. During her time at the Bar she was deeply involved in professional leadership, serving on the ACT Bar Council from 2013 until her judicial appointment. She chaired both the Family Law Committee and the Women Barristers Sub-Committee, and in 2022 became the first woman elected as President of the ACT Bar.
Justice Curran now sits on both first instance and appellate matters in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. She is Co-Chair of the Court’s Judicial Wellbeing Committee and a member of the Indigenous Access to Justice Committee, reflecting her commitment to improving equity within the legal system. Her Honour has a particular interest in Indigenous access to justice and engagement across the Pacific, including representing the Court at the UNICEF Children’s Conference in Fiji in 2024.
