Renee Grogan

2002 - 2003

Sustainability specialist Renee Grogan has built an international career at the intersection of natural resources, environmental governance and responsible investment. She lived at John XXIII College from 2002 to 2003 while studying at the Australian National University, where the friendships and perspectives she encountered within the residential community became a lasting influence on her personal and professional life.

Over nearly two decades in the global mining sector, Renee held senior sustainability roles with leading mining companies across Australia, the United States, Africa, Europe and the Pacific. Her work focused on environmental and social performance, regulatory approvals and risk management, helping companies navigate complex sustainability challenges in large-scale resource projects. She later co-founded Impossible Metals, a sustainable mining technology company operating in the United States and Canada, where she served as Chief Sustainability Officer and worked to advance responsible approaches to emerging mining technologies.

After leaving the mining industry, Renee transitioned into finance and is now Stewardship Lead at JANA Investment Advisers, where she works with institutional investors to strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) outcomes across their investment portfolios. Living with her family on a regenerative farm in northern New South Wales, she remains passionate about responsible stewardship of land, resources and industries—driven by the goal of leaving a more sustainable world for future generations.

Quote
"Resilience and empathy are an incredibly powerful combination: one we see most often in female leaders. The combination makes better leaders, better collaborators, and better humans. Let us celebrate, promote, and encourage this formidable combination of toughness and tenderness, always remembering that both are strengths."
