The experience provided an important foundation for her independence and academic focus, allowing her to thrive within a supportive intellectual community.
Sandra went on to become one of Australia’s most respected university leaders. A sociologist by training, she served as Vice-Chancellor and President of James Cook University from 2007 to 2022, leading a major multi-campus institution with a strong presence across northern Australia and the global tropics. Alongside her leadership of the university, she maintained an extensive portfolio of national and international governance roles, contributing to policy, regional development and higher education reform. She also led successful international advocacy to establish the United Nations International Day of the Tropics (29 June), highlighting the global significance of tropical regions and the challenges they face.
Throughout her career Sandra has served on and chaired numerous national and international boards, councils and advisory bodies across sectors including infrastructure, education, philanthropy and regional development. Her contributions have been widely recognised, including her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to higher education, research and regional development.
